Consumer Information

When you choose Home Preservation Systems products for your home, you can rest assured you have selected premium products produced by manufacturers with decades of experience in their fields of specialty. The key to the success of most home improvement products is dependent upon the quality of the contractor you choose and his ensuing attention to detail during preparation and installation. Our products are available only through independently owned and operated home improvement contractors and professionals—and are not available for purchase through retail outlets.

At HPS, we do not sell our products directly to the consumer/homeowner because professional equipment is required, as well as precise installation procedures. For you to become an "educated consumer", you should know what to expect—before, during and after the processes of beautifying and protecting your home.

When choosing to have Extreme Performance Coating applied to your home, you should be prepared to see significant preparation and work performed. Your independent contractor, like any home improvement contractor, should be able to provide you with proof of liability insurance and local or state licensing requirements necessary in your area. During the course of your project, you will find windows, doors and other fixtures covered for protection from time to time and maybe throughout the duration of the job. This small inconvenience is about protecting your property from exposure to work being performed. It may be necessary to pull mulch away from the base of your home, remove gutters, shutters and other obstacles in the way of required sealant, bonder and coating installations. You should expect to see any and all damaged or rotted siding removed and replaced. Certain siding materials are inherently under performing—like pressed particle board, for example. These materials have been used in the past because they are less costly, but have little resistance to moisture and exposure to the elements. In these instances, if there is little or no damage to the siding, it's a good idea to have your contractor remove the bottom board around the entire home, and any corner boards, window trim and any boards showing swelling or deterioration. These areas should be replaced with a cement based composite siding with a matching texture. If more than casual evidence of damage, swelling or deterioration exists, you will want to consider replacing all the siding before coating.

Homes often have problems and damage resulting from lower price contractor grade products used during construction, or poor attention to installation standards. During your installation of Extreme Performance Coating, it is common to find your independent contractor repairing or replacing defective materials they discover such as rotted or split wood, cracks in masonry, removal of failed caulking or poorly adhering paint and more. They can explain the reasons in detail if you wish. When it comes to your home, you should never allow anyone to cover damaged areas as they will only get worse and may adversely affect the performance of any products used.

Extreme Performance Bonding Primer is applied to virtually all non-corrosive areas of your home that have been properly prepared. This product will not be the color you choose for your home, but will usually be a light gray "guide coat" color that is easier to see during application and dries quickly. It is often best to install the Extreme-Seal Sealant after the Bonding Primer is applied, depending on the condition of the substrate after preparation. Expect to see all joints and seams sealed with a thick bead of Extreme-Seal Sealant—a highly-adhesive, flexible and durable caulking compound. Special attention should be given to corner joints and edges of trim around windows and doors to prevent water intrusion. Failed or poor quality caulk should first be removed. Nails that have protruded should be reset, and holes filled with Extreme-Seal Sealant. No joints or seams should be left unprotected as this is the most common point of entry for damaging water intrusion.

Extreme Performance Coating is a high build, thick film that is formulated for optimal protection, yet shows the natural character and beauty of your home. For example, if you have rough-sawn cedar, you will see the grain and texture after application. Sometimes this is actually nicely enhanced because of the attractive satin finish of Extreme Performance Coating. This is where you will see the color you have selected. Your independent contractor knows the weather restrictions on application and they should never add anything to HPS products—using them just as they are formulated in the factories. A properly completed installation will be free of pin holes, voids, gaps, and open seams where any water can enter the siding or substrate, and the Extreme Performance Coating will be applied to a nominal or average of 10 mils dry film thickness. This equates to 10 times thicker than a house paint of 25% volume solids applied at 400 square feet per gallon.

At HPS, we feel it is important for you to know what to expect during the course of your project. Not all home improvement contractors have the same integrity and desire to perform their best. HPS is not a contractor. The warranty is only valid on projects completed by designated independent contractors using HPS products and following specified installation procedures. It is our hope that by making this information available to everyone, you the homeowner can become more pro-active in the beautification and protection of your home.
